Abstract

This research has two aims. First, it surveys the level of interest in Languages Other Than English (LOTE) that are not currently taught at DPU. Second, it investigates the feasibility of offering foreign languages online.
A questionnaire about interest in LOTE was distributed to 268 Thai students who were drawn from the pool of 400 English major and non-major students. These included first through fourth year students, who were enrolled in various English courses.
According to the results of the questionnaire, an e-learning course was organized for the LOTE with the highest demand, in this case Korean. Participants in the LOTE e-learning project joined voluntarily, mainly from the English department.
A record of learners’ online activity and attendance at tutorials revealed that the all but one of students prefer the traditional classroom setting to e-learning. In particular, of all the enrollees in the e-learning project, only one completed all of the online lessons. Furthermore, the participants who regularly attended tutorials all show proficiency gains, as demonstrated by a written test.
The information gained from the study confirms that personal learning style and socio-cultural background influence the student’s willingness to use CALL.
